Polar bears are among the largest meat eaters on land. If these two males were to unleash their full power on each other they could inflict serious damage. But this is play fighting a test of physical skill among animals that can grow to nearly nine feet. It's a ritual repeated around the world by the seven other species that make up the family of the bear. From the largest to the smallest bears have been shaped by their varied habitats.

The polar bear, with its heat-absorbing coat lives exclusively in the Arctic Circle. lts closest relative, the brown or grizzly bear lives in the more temperate climates of Europe and North America. The main inhabitant of North America and the most numerous of all is the black bear. The spectacled bear is an adept tree climber in the cloud forests of South America. The sloth bear is unusual snout and claws enables it to root out termites in India and Sri Lanka. The giant panda feeds mainly on bamboo in the inland forests of China. The Asiatic black bear roams the southern part of the continent and has a distinctive shaggy coat with a crescent-shaped marking. And the smallest of all the agile sun bear lives in the lowland forests of Southeast Asia.

For all their differences in appearance bears have many characteristics in common. Like humans, when bears walk their heels and their soles both touch the ground. They can also walk upright on their hind feet able to watch out for danger, look for food and fight. All bears can swim. The brown and polar bears are especially at home in the water where they hunt the rich food supply. But often they seem to spend time in the water for the sheer joy of it. All bears have acute senses. Their sense of smell may be on par with that of a bloodhound. Despite the apparently small size of their external ears they have a keen sense of hearing.

And although it's not known whether all bears have color vision some can distinguish between ripe and unripe berries. Most bear's lips are prehensile not attached to the gums and are therefore flexible enough to grasp and pick small fruit. Some bears have even been known to peel a grape using only their lips. All bears have non-retractable claws in some species, up to six inches long.

Their teeth are among the largest of any carnivore despite the fact that many bears have adapted to a largely vegetarian diet. But all bears, by definition, are carnivores. And brown bears can be relentless hunters hitting speeds of up to thirty miles per hour and showing surprising stamina despite their bulk. Most of all, bears are opportunists. They will eat anything and everything. Garbage dumps are easy pickings. The carcass of huge beached whale provides an unexpected and unusual meal. Even polar bears, the most voracious of meat eaters are opportunists sometimes and will resort to eating straggly grass if there's no meat to be had.

Opportunism aside, all bears need a staple diet on which their survival ultimately depends. A spectacled bear's diet is at least eighty percent vegetarian and a favorite food source are bromeliads that grow high in the trees. This bear will need all its strength and climbing skills to bring its meal down to the ground. Only then can it get to the flesh of this tropical plant. The sloth bear uses it long claws to rake out its favorite food, termites. Once a nest has been exposed the bear uses its mobile lips to blow away the dust. It then closes its nostrils and noisily sucks up the termites.

Black bears will occasionally eat meat but they survive mainly on a diet of fruit, nuts and insects. But these are less nutritious than meat and time consuming to collect forcing the bear to spend much of its day feeding. Soapberries are a favorite food among American black bears. They take great care to select only the fruit and to avoid the less nutritious leaves. Although the sun bear eats insects, fruits and bugs this is a bear that eats honey. It's able to use its long tongue to extract the nectar but pays a price in countless, painful bee stings.

The Asiatic black bears are adept tree climbers and will eat almost anything in their path be it animal or vegetable. Unlike the most highly specialized vegetarian of them all the giant panda whose diet is ninety-nine percent bamboo. Yet even pandas share an evolutionary path with voracious meat eaters like wolves. Around thirty-five million years ago the ancestors of bears branched from the raccoons and the so-called bear dogs. These early bears were small dog-like meat eaters The most ancient of today's bear species is the giant panda.

Studies of its DNA link the giant panda firmly with the bears whereas the red panda is considered to be a raccoon. Pandas became giants when they adapted to a diet of bamboo and grew too lumbering to be hunters. A few million years later the ancestor of all other bears evolved It lived in Asian forests that are the home of today's sun and sloth bears. Between twelve and ten million years ago the running bears emerged They had longer limbs than today's bears which enabled them to hunt fast moving prey and exploit open spaces.

Two million years ago they crossed the Panamanian Land Bridge into South America. Their sole living descendant is the much modified spectacled bear. In Eurasia another branch the Etruscan bears evolved into three separate lineages: Cave bears, brown bears and black bears. The cave bear became extinct but the brown and black bears were able to adapt to the available sources of food. One northern population of brown bears began feeding on seals among the ice floes and so emerged the polar bear. A female polar bear leaves her den after a long winter's sleep.

She's lost up to forty percent of her weight during a four to six month hibernation and the birth of her two cubs. She will spend up to ten days near the den to allow her cubs to adapt to the freezing climate. At night they will take shelter inside where the temperature can be as high as sixty-eight degrees. Eventually, she and her cubs have to leave the den to search for food. Ring seals are the polar bear's favorite food. They live beneath the ice, but must surface to breathe. Doing so, however, puts them in danger.

A polar bear will sit motionless for many hours waiting for a seal to surface. Seals can also surface at breathing holes that they create by gouging out solid ice with their teeth and claws. But a polar bear can smell a seal under three feet of snow over half a mile away. A polar bear owes its powerful sense of smell to a structure in its nose known as the turbinate bone. lts folds and scrolls create an enormous surface area that is packed with olfactory receptors.

In turn, a seal can detect movement above the ice and will swim to alternative holes if it senses danger. Polar bears will also stalk their prey. This three year old male has just made a kill. But is chased off by a larger male who seems more interested in challenging the young bear. Meanwhile a mother and her cub pick up the scent and head......cautiously towards the seal, not knowing it is dead. The mother paddles towards her prey through channels of melt water. If needed she can swim like this for more than sixty miles without resting. She has large webbed fore claws which provide propulsion. Her hind legs act as a rudder and stabilizer.

The two to four years that a cub follows its mother is an intense learning period. Though this seal turns out to be dead the cub now understands the stealth needed to hunt. In times of plenty polar bears will eat only the more nutritious fat and skin but for the mother and cub this is a rare and welcome feast. Getting to a food supply often requires dexterity and problem-solving abilities.

This young black bear has learned that there is usually an abundant meal beneath a rock. With great care and strength it is able to remove the rock and expose the nest of ants beneath. But what if the food itself is protected...by a tough and inedible cover. The panda is able to feed almost exclusively on bamboo only because it has a sixth digit. This so called thumb is actually an extension of the wrist bone. This allows it to grasp bamboo stems firmly in one paw. The panda can strip the coat from the bamboo using its two prominent front teeth and crush the stems with huge molars to get to the soft tissue inside.

The panda's skull is wider and deeper than other bears with a crest that runs the length of the head providing a large surface area for the attachment of its necessarily powerful jaw muscles. But pandas still have the simple stomach and intestines of a carnivore which means that they can only digest about twenty percent of their bamboo diet. Unlike herbivore stomachs which contain microorganisms to dissolve plant matter pandas have evolved a tough gullet and mucous cells that coat the stomach so it won be torn by the shards of chewed bamboo. They also have a very thick stomach wall effective in squeezing and churning large quantities of tough vegetation.

To maintain their energy levels they must eat constantly spending up to fourteen hours a day doing nothing else. In fact, the panda can only afford to sleep about four hours a day. Adaptation is the key to survival in a cold climate. Despite their bulk, polar bears are quite sure footed on ice, usually. lts feet are larger in proportion to its body than those of other bears. Add to that the hairs and suction pads on the soles of their feet and the polar bears can get a good grip on a slippery surface.

Polar bears have evolved a thick layer of fat and a dense under fur. This is so effective that even when temperatures drop to around minus thirty-five degrees their body temperature
remains unchanged Despite appearances, polar bear hairs are not white. Instead, they are colorless and hollow like fiber optic wires. They conduct the sun's ultra violent rays down to the black skin where they are absorbed. This can be so effective that polar bears may actually overheat.

And so to cool down, they spread themselves out on the ice. Polar bears can store immense amounts of fat over four inches thick. But this fat layer is not simply for insulation. When food becomes scarce the bear can live off this store for months at a time. This means that a polar bear's body weight can fluctuate enormously in one recorded case, by as much as nine hundred pounds.

When forced to live on this fat alone they can enter a state known as winter sleep. After around fourteen days without food they will switch into winter sleep regardless of the time of year. They don't urinate and have no need to drink because they recycle their waste while barely using their kidneys. Hibernation is not unique to polar bears. Brown bears will dig dens for themselves or hole up in caves or hollow logs. When you're about to sleep, comfort is a top priority

Dr. Lynn Rogers and his wife, Donna began studying bears in their dens thirty years ago by tracking black bears to their winter homes in the forests of Northern Minnesota.

"I got into bear studies back in 1967 and I was excited about that...because I thought it was, ah, working with dangerous animals. And then I got into it and I saw that they're not the dangerous animals. I had always thought they were and there was an awful lot that wasn't known about them. I became intensely curious about how they live."

Lynn Rogers first had to learn to sedate bears in order to get them out of the den which can be difficult when they weigh as much as a quarter of a ton And he didn't know how they'd react.

"I goofed up. A lot of the bears that were awake they greeted me by lunging at the entrance kind of like <blowing> and ah, it was so explosive. I couldn't help but jump back. But after seeing that hundreds of times then I realized it's more of a ritualized display than any serious threat. In fact, I wondered one time... wonder what would happen if I would call this bear's bluff and when it bluffs, I crawl, I crawled in And I did, and she bluffed from the back of the den then kept her distance from me......and eventually turned her head to the side hid in the corner and left her cubs exposed to me."

This is the time of the year when we can get the answers to the questions that we're wondered about the whole year. Also, we can find out all at once with all the bears in the dens how many cubs they had how fat they got, what kind of a year it was for them. He also began radio tracking the movements of black bears throughout the rest of the year. What we've learned from this, ah from the radios as we've flown over bears and just got glimpses of them little segments of their life through the year we've learned how big an area bears need to survive. Ah, all the travels they take the habitats they're used and the kind of the general things that bears do to make a living.

Bears live in home ranges which are determined by the availability of food A male black bear's range can be up to forty square miles and can include anything from verdant valley floors to towering rocky cliffs. Throughout their lives bears acquire a detailed knowledge of their home ranges and clearly have good memories. Bears have a tremendous ability to remember feeding sites and to find their way in the wild. They can build a mental map that's superior to anything that we could come up with.

A little cub a few month old cub toddling along behind its mother and she leads it on a trek forty miles outside of her usual territory and shows it, ah, a nice oak stand. When that cub grew up he remembered that oak stand and returned to that thing. Another bear made a trip a hundred and twenty-six miles kind of a circular trip, it went, went out there. Then it was time to come back and hibernate. It came straight home as if it had constructed a mental map on the way back way out and knew which way was home. It traveled only at night, and most of the time no vision of the stars and moon because it was cloudy under a forest canopy, and acted like it had a mental compass. lt, didn't take any easy paths. It just went straight in the direction towards home no matter what the barriers.

All bears have a compass sense. But how it works is unknown. The most striking example comes from polar bears whose home ranges are not only the widest but are literally shifting. Their compass sense allows them to navigate accurately over more than one hundred thousand square miles of moving ice floes and still find their way back to familiar ground. Even when the ice floes are turning their compass sense coupled with a powerful homing instinct will still take them home.

From the great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee scientists are trying to redistribute black bears to other areas that can support them. But first, they must overcome the bear's homing instinct. Though some mechanism that we're not... fully ah, that we don't fully understand, they're they're very capable of, of homing in on, on where they originated from. And we've had bears in this study do that. We've had bears that have traveled, over a hundred miles. And they had one animal that, that, went from Big South Fork on the almost Kentucky line to almost the Georgia line right there at Chattanooga, Tennessee, so you can see the the extent and the capability of, of these animals to, to move.

Joe Clark's team is trying to relocate female black bears to areas of the Southeastern United States which have not had black bear populations for over one hundred years. Today, they are tracking a female bear tagged over a year ago. Once they have located her den she will be tranquilized and prepared for the one hundred mile journey to what they hope will be her new home range. We're trying to target females with cubs. They give birth in the winter time while they're hibernating in those dens during, during January. Here it is March, and the cubs will be you know six weeks, eight weeks old. We've going to immobilize her, move her up to Big South Fork about a hundred miles from here place her in a den that we've chosen for her.

She will wake up and she will wonder obviously you know... where am I? But she's basically stuck there because she's got these young cubs that she has to care for. So, when she emerges from that den in mid-April or May she'll have these very young, very immobile cubs that will not be able to follow her back to the Smoky Mountains. So she's basically stuck there Clark's team has already found that the female bear they are targeting today has four cubs all of which will have to be moved with the mother to their new home. She and her cubs are sleeping in the hollow below a fallen tree. It's the end of the hibernation season and the team has to approach the den with great care or the mother may awaken and bolt, abandoning her cubs.

By early May, the family is settled in its new territory. The reintroduction effort has been successful because the mother's maternal instinct has overridden her homing instinct. The cubs are now following their instincts making a mental map of their new home range Kodiak Island off the Alaskan coast is home to one of the world's largest concentrations of brown bears. It is February, and deep inside a well protected den a female has given birth to four cubs. Brown bears produce litters only once every three to five years usually consisting of just two cubs. Even the healthiest mother is unlikely to give birth to more than eight cubs in her lifetime. Because of this low birth rate mothers will go to great lengths to ensure the survival of their offspring.

Driven by hunger the mother gathers her cubs and leaves the den. She has lost nearly fifty percent of her body weight. But thanks to her highly developed memory and compass sense she knows that there is a source of food over this mountain. First, she introduces the cubs to the cold conditions on the mountain. The cubs eventually get the courage to venture onto the unfamiliar snow. But once they are settled, they become playful reluctant to continue the climb. At the mountain summit, the mother and her cubs rest. But while three of her cubs appear healthy the smallest is already showing signs of weakness.

Bears are normally solitary animals. But in September, when the salmon are running the concentrated abundance of food brings them together in groups of up to fifty. This is when young bears get a lesson in hunting their own food. They will remember this site for the remainder of their lives and come back year after year. Finally, the mother and three of her cubs arrive at the stream. Her  smallest has died on the mountain. And now they face a new threat. A large male blocks their path to the river. A female with cubs is not sexually receptive. But if the male can kill the cubs it's possible that she'll eventually come into season and mate with him.

The mother tries to warn the male off but he continues to stalk the cubs. The mother charges the male with a display of great ferocity. She may be smaller than he is but her maternal instinct gives her the upper hand. Eventually, the male leaves. Whenever bear cubs are vulnerable these confrontations will be played out again and again. Aggressive black bears can be thwarted by mothers signaling their cubs to climb out of danger.

Black bears can communicate not just warnings but a surprisingly sophisticated range of emotions. It's easy to read the emotions of bears because that's their main communication......not so much communicating detail but in communicating their emotions about a situation. And, they, they seem to have all the emotions that we have. And there's, three levels of communication that they use. There's the grunts that mothers use to their cubs and that they use to, to friendly bears and sometimes to people.

There's, a next higher level of intensity where they're expelling air sometimes quite sharply in different ways. And many of these are expressions of fear. And then they have deep resonant human-like voice that's used to experience a range of of emotions of high intensity. This can be, great pleasure, great fear, pain, anger. They have, as far as I can see they've got all the same emotions that we do. Dan, you'll drop off two people and then come down and pick up Chip. And then thirty-three is probably going to be in this canyon right up in here so we want to move her up front.

Low birth rates and the ever present threat of predators makes the survival rates of bears an important issue for scientists. This team, led by Vic Barnes is studying bears using electronic collars. These devices must be replaced every three years. The bears are targeted with a tranquilizing drug giving researchers a few minutes to fit new collars. Barnes has discovered that sixty percent of bears die before the end of their third year.

A lot of information on habitat use critical feeding areas critical denning areas, their home ranges. We also get an awful lot of good information on productivity and survival. We've had some animals we've been marking animals for ten to eleven years. Some animals we have a good ten year history on them. We've followed them through two and three litters. We know the survival of the litters. Right now about, only about forty percent of the of the cubs that we identify in the spring survive to be weaned at two and three years old. Given that so few bears reach their maximum life span of thirty years it is surprising they haven't evolved a more prolific breeding strategy. Only one in three brown bear females will breed in any given year.

So for a male to successfully mate each year he must travel up to four hundred fifty square miles to encompass the home range of at least three females. When he eventually finds a receptive female he mates with her many times a day for up to a week to ensure fertilization. The reproductive stakes get even higher when it comes to pandas. Females are receptive for only two to three days a year between March and May and produce on average only one cub every two years. Female giant pandas travel within a range of little more than a square mile.

Males scent mark commonly used panda trails with a form of perfumed grease. But scent is only one mating signal and a relatively temporary one at that.Biting trees and stripping their bark lasts longer. And all of these elaborate efforts are for nothing if the female is not in heat. This male appears to be making very little progress. When a female panda gives birth she can only look after one cub at a time and leaves any other newborn to die.

At the Wolong Giant Panda Research Station in China's Szechwan Province researchers are nursing the cubs that their mothers cannot care for. This rejected three month old cub was one of twins but this represents only a small success. The giant pandas remain firmly on the endangered species list. American black bears have survived best of all to the present day with a population that may be as large as three quarters of a million. But the numbers of brown bears have fallen dramatically to no more than one hundred fifty thousand. There are no firm estimates for the Asiatic black bear.

There may be forty thousand polar bears but less than two thousand spectacled bears. There are between seven hundred and one thousand giant pandas and between one thousand and ten thousand sloth bears. As for the sun bears, no one really knows. Now more than ever, these bears must depend upon the adaptability that has brought them this far to ensure their continued survival.

The ocean is everything. It covers seven-tenths of the Earth. Its breath is pure and healthy. There is an immense desert where a man is never alone, where he can feel how the lives of all tremble inside of him. The sea is just a container for all the tremendous, supernatural things that exist in it. "It is not only movement and love, "but the living infinity." So wrote Jules Verne, about 150 years ago, in his classic adventure story 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

And his words are as true today as they were back then. Anyone who has ever looked down on a great ocean has probably been impressed by the sheer size of it. A size which seems to stretch on almost forever. Whether it is the smooth, blue surface of the water, or the rough, towering waves as they break and crash, the sea is always breathtaking. But then, if you look below the surface, you will discover a totally new and fascinating world. It is a world full of life, colour and variety,  full of fabulous, almost fairytale, creatures and landscapes.

It is little wonder that the sea and its inhabitants have provided us with so much inspiration for so many stories. Take these little guys for example. Do they seem familiar? Perhaps in the way they are sometimes mischievous and sometimes timid, hiding between these sea anemones. Of course, these are the stars of the wonderful animated film Finding Nemo which turned clown fish into world-famous movie actors. In the film, Nemo's father goes on a long and perilous journey to find his lost son. But in real life, clown fish try to avoid leaving the symbiosis they share with the sea anemone.

Sea anemones are protected by the clown fish and butterfly fish. And these fish are, in turn, some of the few fish that are resistant to the poison arms of the sea anemones. And the sea anemones protect our little Nemo from all the other predators. Fascinating, isn't it? Just as the anemone provides a home for the clown fish, the whole sea and the coral reefs offer a home to a vast multitude of sea dwellers. The corals can be as big as cities, in which very different sea creatures have gathered to live side by side.

And yet, there are some animals which live all by themselves, and others that only feel good when they are on the move in huge swarms.Let's take a look at some schools of fish as they go about their business. Here we see a large swarm of striped grunters, also known as pigfish. Elegantly and skilfully, swarm fish swim in the same direction and in near perfect formation It is almost as if they are being directed by a mysterious internal instinct.

Also, to be part of a big swarm makes sense to a small fish because it is always dangerous under the water and you have to be constantly on your guard as you are likely to have many pairs of eyes on you at any one time. Because every individual is surrounded by its own co-species, the swarm builds its own protection. Even a large predator will think twice before attacking such a huge,
threatening-looking swarm. And if he should attack, the chances of survival for any one individual in the protection of a swarm are not too bad.

There are habitual swarm fish that swim together all their lives, but there are also opportunist swarm fish which only pull together during an attack, or in times of danger. It can also happen that very different types of fish will build a swarm. These swarms show even more vividly the great patterns and colours of the fish. Here, you can truly see the overwhelming power and beauty of nature. There are so many different species of fish, that sometimes it is hard to find an appropriate name for all of them.

For this one, however, the choice was pretty easy. The parrot fish owes its name to its striking similarity to the colourful bird. They are not only just as colourful as their feathered namesake, but their numerous teeth are arranged in a way that resembles a parrot-like beak. This tooth construction enables them to rasp algae from coral and other rocky substrates. They are even able to grind up coral rock, which they ingest during feeding. After they digest the rock, they excrete it as sand, helping to create small islands and sandy beaches.

One parrot fish can produce 90 kilograms of sand each year. This special feature of the parrot fish is a valuable contribution to our ecosystem as it saves the coral reefs from being overgrown with seaweed. The parrot fish also has a very good friend, the trumpet fish. They both like to swim together through the reef. As they swim, the trumpet fish likes to eat whatever the parrot fish stirs up and does not want to eat alone. Outside of mealtimes, however, trumpet fish can often be found alone.

They like to hang upside down in the water and float a little. Also, they often seek the proximity of coral branches in order to camouflage themselves, which all works out pretty well. They search for an environment that looks just like they do. They swim slowly, or lie motionless like a floating stick, swaying back and forth with the wave action of the water. When it comes to camouflage and disguise, the octopus is clearly in a different league. What this animal can do is nothing short of unbelievable. They simply adapt to their surroundings, whatever they may happen to be.

Take a look at how these quick-change artists can play us for a fool. By simply changing their colours, they can hide anywhere they want to, in plain sight. Here we see a damselfish interacting with an octopus. This is an excellent example of the damselfish's general compatibility with other fish and invertebrates. However, the colourful damselfish doesn't protect itself with camouflage. They find protection from predators amongst the stinging branches of the anemones. The damselfish can be found in all the seven seas.

The average size of damsels is around two inches, but they can reach over 14 inches in length. Damselfish even cultivate red filamentous algae. Garibaldi and damselfish are the only fish currently known to engage in farming or cultivating. That might be why damselfish are very settled and never leave their territory. Young damselfish are often very colourful. Brilliantly hued in blues, greens, violets, reds and browns. But with age, they lose their colourful appearance and all full-grown damselfish look more or less the same.

Sea turtles do not breathe through gills like fish, they need air like humans do. That's because they are descendants of the land-dwelling turtles that moved into the oceans about 100 million years ago. Even today, they still deposit their eggs on land and the little babies that hatch go right back into the water as fast as they can. Sadly, the sea turtle is an endangered species. The threat that endangers them is humans, who hunt them for their meat, their eggs, and their shells. The shells are considered to be a lucky charm in Asia. It seems to me that a live sea turtle itself should be considered a lucky charm because every time I see one my heart rejoices.

That's how beautiful and graceful they are. Now, most of us humans are trying to protect the sea turtles, and there have already been some notable successes along the way. All sea turtles are officially under species protection. Trading sea turtle products has been forbidden. It is also forbidden to capture or kill them. All around the planet, organisations and animal rights activists are trying to protect these animals by sealing off breeding areas, or by building new breeding stations. We humans have a real responsibility for the sea dwellers of this world. We should not treat this lightly. Jacques Cousteau, one of the greatest explorers and a very passionate diver, once put it this way. "Underwater.

"In this paradise, humans are merely guests, and they should behave that way. " Jellyfish have adapted themselves very well for life in this underwater paradise All jellyfish sting their prey, but this isn't always done intentionally, as even the slightest contact will trigger their automatic response mechanism to protect themselves by stinging any potential predator. Don't they look incredibly graceful as they float around? And speaking of graceful, squids are excellent swimmers. They are extremely active and they seem to do quite well when it comes to adapting to the changing environment around them. More than 300 different types of squid have been identified around the world.

The size of a squid can vary depending on the species. Some of them are only 24 inches long, while others are more than 40 feet in length. The heaviest squid ever found weighed more than 1,000 pounds. Maybe that's the reason for many old stories that depict them as monsters living in the deep. Corals can only be found in the ocean, especially around the Tropical Belt. There are soft corals, and stony corals. The stony corals form skeletons by storing limestone, which leads to the formation of coral banks or coral reefs. These skeletons often look like tree twigs, and the tips of those twigs are often covered with colourful polyps.

These polyps have a wide spectrum of colours which make the corals look like underwater flowering plants. Corals have existed for 400 million years. Like most deep-sea marine creatures, corals are filter feeders, which means that they get their nourishment through micro-plankton which contains nutrients as well as trace elements which the coral absorbs by filtering them through the ocean current.

The corals are endangered in many parts of the world, and yet they only have two real enemies. Global warming, which influences the algal growth and as a result, algae can then produce toxic substances that are harmful to corals, and humans who break them when they are industrial fishing or even only diving on vacation. A coral typically takes hundreds of years to fully grow, which is why we should be careful whenever we pay them a visit. This will ensure that not only we, but the generations that come after us, can fully enjoy the wonderful play of colours and the exciting hustle and bustle that corals play host to.

Encountering a ray is a terrific experience. Nothing compares to the graceful and weightless swimming of this marvellous fish. The ray has its mouth on its underside and it loves to search through the sand looking for food. When a ray swims through the reef it almost looks like it is flying. One species of ray is even named after a bird. The eagle ray. Rays can grow to be really large. The eagle ray, for example, can reach a wingspan of over eight feet. But you can certainly find bigger and tougher creatures in the depths of the ocean. Despite their size, or rather because of their enormous size, the sea cows, or manatees, are very pleasant cohabitants of the oceans.

They are very relaxed and curious. Because they are mammals, they must surface to breathe air. They are good swimmers in spite of their weight, and are never on their own. In the past, sailors who saw manatees often mistook them for mythical mermaids because of their tails. An easy mistake to make, as you can well imagine that the sudden and unexpected flash of a manatee tail at sea would be quite a shock to the extremely superstitious sailors of old. Sea lions can live in the water, but they can also live on land. While they are very lazy and slow on land, they make up for it with their staggering skills underwater.

They are as fast as rockets. They are agile, they perform somersaults, and are simply amazing. Look at just how much fun a sea lion can have in its cool and watery playground. And if you have ever seen dolphins underwater, you will know that they too rank among the very best swimmers, and that they also like to joke around once in a while. They simply love to swim inside streams and currents. And, of course, they definitely enjoy being on the move with their dolphin friends.

Compared to the dolphin, the blowfish is more of a loner, a very beautiful loner and also very cunning. If a blowfish feels threatened, it simply inflates itself with water and blows itself up to twice its normal size. This defence method has successfully thrown several opponents off track. However, the blowfish does not have a large number of enemies, and most of them are aware that its skin surface is protected by a nasty poison and this doesn't exactly make the blowfish a very desirable prey. Characterised by a bony, box-like shell, the trunkfish, or boxfish, has a very similar technique to protect itself. It secretes a colourless toxin from glands on its skin when touched.

There are about 20 species of trunkfish, including the cowfish, the blue and the grey boxfish, and as we can see here, the spotted trunkfish. Trunkfish are small. The largest species growing to about 20 inches. They are colourful fish with bright patterns of blue, red, white and black. Some species are even capable of changing their colour. Fish have often been a source of inspiration to us, and as a result they have been given beautiful and extraordinary names. Such as the French marine angelfish, which are some of the most alluring of all fish. Life in the coral reef is wild and it's thrilling. It is a never-ending spectacle and its biological diversity and wondrous forms and colours continue to startle and fascinate us.

Slow and stately, the angelfish moves at a leisurely pace amongst the coral heads and overhanging plate corals in search of food. There are around 100 different species of angelfish that inhabit the waters of the Southern Hemisphere. They can grow up to 12 inches and generally have very brightly coloured markings, but the exact colours depend on the species of angelfish. These remarkable goatfish have two barbels extending from the chin. These are used to probe the sand for food such as worms, brittle stars, crustaceans and small fish. The sand tilefish are remarkable, too.

These fish are simply tireless in their search through the sand and can dig up whole landscapes. They never seem to grow weary of digging their holes in the sand. Here are some more angelfish. They are aptly named, and they are best known for their vivacious colour display and their intricate patterns, which are known to change significantly as they grow old. Their bodies have a flat disc-like form that allows them to slip between rocky outcroppings and reef crevices. They are omnivores. That is, they usually eat both animals and plants. With a little luck, deep down at the far end of the reef you might find the enormous tarpons.

At over six feet long, they look most impressive and almost lordly. They inhabit tropical waters from Florida to South America. Perhaps the most unique internal feature of the tarpon is the modified swim bladder. This allows the tarpon to take oxygen directly from the atmosphere and thus increases its tolerance of oxygen-poor waters. The lion-fish is truly wonderful, and its diverse feathering makes it a coveted addition to show-aquariums. In fact, the lion-fish originally came from the waters of the Pacific Ocean, between Malaysia and Japan, its habitat being lagoons and outer reefs.

Since the end of the 20th century, the lion-fish has been sighted in the west part of the North Atlantic Ocean, from the coast of Florida up to North Carolina. Set free by aquarists, the lion-fish now has no natural enemies and breeds too strongly and too fast. Often, and without meaning to, humans interfere with ecosystems they do not completely understand and misfortunes are bound to occur, and sadly things might never go back to their natural order.

Watching manta rays as they swim is an extraordinary experience. Often they appear in pods, which is the term for when several fish swim together, and they like to visit cleaning stations. Including the tail, manta rays can range from 16 to 29 feet long. Their wide heads have slightly movable and rounded fins on both sides. These fins help them to direct plankton into their mouths. And there is no need to be afraid of their long tail, because it never carries a poisonous sting.

Mantas are very calm creatures and completely harmless to humans. This has been a truly fantastic journey. A journey all the way through the reefs of our amazing oceans, and I hope that it has brought you many unforgettable wonders to savour. Perhaps Jacques Cousteau put it best when he said, "The sea, once it casts its spell, "holds one in its net of wonder forever."

lf you think some couples make war not love just wait 'til you see the battle of the sexes that takes place in the natural world. We're counting down the top ten most extreme partnership power struggles in the animal kingdom and comparing them to our own rocky relationships. Discover that there are reasons why males and females seem to come from different planets when the battle of the sexes is taken to the Most Extreme.

Earth is a planet of extremes Extreme places And extreme animals. But some animals are more extreme than others. Join us as we countdown to find The Most unusual The Most extraordinary.

The Most Extreme No. 10

Our countdown begins with a big brute lording over a harem of females. After all this is the stereotypical view of relationships in the animal kingdom. But as we'll see there are plenty of other ways to seize power in the battle of the sexes. lt's just that in the natural world brutes don't get much bigger than a bull elephant seal. On the islands of the sub-Antarctic this male reigns supreme by throwing his weight around all two tons of it. The bulls are fighting to become the beachmaster. Only one male will win breeding rights to whatever females around his stretch of beach.

The beachmaster's harem can contain over 100 females that come ashore to give birth. But now that their pups are nearly weaned the battle of the sexes begins. The beachmaster demands a payment from each and every female within his territory. And it's hard to stop this blubbery bully when he's intent on making babies. As if nursing and round-the-clock babysitting isn't enough for female elephant seals the beach master constantly crashes around making sure that none of the harem strays out of his reach. And since a bull can be more than five times the weight of a female his affections can be suffocating.

The elephant seal is number ten in the countdown because there's no stopping his amorous advances. He's so single minded that he can crush and kill any unfortunate pup that gets in his way. lt seems that it's easy to win the battle of the sexes when you're so much bigger than your mate. Just like the elephant seal there are size differences between male and female humans. On average men are about 15% bigger than women. And there are other physical differences between the sexes. lt seems that men and woman actually think differently thanks to the hardwiring of the circuits inside our brain. The human brain is divided into two separate hemispheres connected by the fibres of the corpus callosum.

The way we use the left and right hemispheres influences the way we think. The male brain is structured so that the left side is used for language and the right hand side is used for emotion. But things are very different for females because their fibres connecting the brain's two hemispheres are 23% thicker than in the male brain. Women are able to use both the right and left hemispheres for emotion and language which may explain why women find it much easier to talk about their feelings. So girls if you can't get your man to talk about his feelings - don't get mad: it's all in his head. But the male elephant seal has only one thing on his mind. And the female doesn't care about his feelings.

Having weaned her pup and mated with the beachmaster it's time for her to head back to sea. The only problem is that she now has to run the gauntlet of frustrated bachelors. These bulls weren't tough enough to beat the beachmaster but they're still more than a match for the females. Women's lib is a long way off for the elephant seal. Because the females typically only mate with the biggest meanest males all their aggressive characteristics will be passed on to their male pups. So until the females choose to mate with kinder gentler males this is one battle of the sexes where
the girls will always take a beating.

No. 9

Some women are attracted to tall men. After all having a big burly guy around can make a girl feel safe and protected. ln Africa the attraction of opposite sizes is taken to the extreme. The male shell brooding cichlid fish may only be about 10 centimetres long but compared to his 3 millimetre mate he's proportionately the biggest male in the world. lf humans were the same relative sizes as male and female cichlids it would be like a big guy weighing say 80 kilograms dating a woman who was only one thirtieth of his sizeI that's little more than 2 kilograms!

The male cichlid has to be big because he needs to build an apartment complex for a harem of up to 30 females. Each snail shell he collects will be home for one tiny female and her eggs. The male cichlid is number nine in the countdown because he's so dominant that he can keep his women in convenient carry cases!. The tiny females lay their eggs inside the shells. Then the huge male hovers over them showering them in sperms. The bigger the male the better his chances of protecting his harem from groups of marauding bachelors. They'll try to rain on his parade by leaving their own sperm in a shell.

There once was a time when human females were also expected to stay indoors and bring up the kids. ln victorian England just like the cichlid a women's place was in the home. That was until
militant suffragettes went to battle for a woman's right to vote. Their violent protests included cutting telegraph wires breaking windows and burning houses. They even sacrificed themselves for the cause I literally-when Emily Davidson threw herself in front of the King's racehorse in the 1913 Derby. lt wasn't until the First World War that women really started to come out of their shells. They contributed so much to the war effort that they won the vote in both England and the US.

Women became part of the workforce and they've never left it since. But 100 years after the suffragettes women may now be suffering from another kind of oppression. Some working women feel that it's too hard trying to balance full time jobs with bringing up children. Women are now twice as likely to suffer from depression and some researchers suggest it's due to stress. So will the next battle for the women's movement be a fight for less stress?

But the female cichlid doesn't stress because she's safe inside her shell. And sometimes she has company because not all male cichlids are big and bold. Some tiny males disguise themselves
in female colours so they can sneak past the big male. Once inside the shell they can make babies with the female. But once you move in together you have to share the housework - unlike our next contender!. We've seen big bullies on the beach. And girls that never come out of their shells. But as the countdown continues the females fight back but are they strong enough to give the King of the Jungle a fright? And later we'll discover that there's no love lost when you're on a dinner date with a she-devil. That's coming up on. The Most Extreme

The Most Extreme No. 8

On the plains of Africa where some of the biggest predators on the planet roam it pays to have a bodyguard. But in the animal world protection doesn't come cheap-even when you're the King of The Jungle. The lion is number eight in the countdown because his pride is a group of girls that wait on him hand and foot. Lions are the only social cats on the planet living in groups of up to 30  individuals. A pride of lions is mostly made up of related females and their cubs with a few males who act as body guards. The girls do all the childcare even nursing each other's babies.

Occasionally the males do a little babysitting. The male lions are left guarding the cubs because the females have gone off to get the groceries. The lion is number eight in the countdown becausehe seems like the ultimate male chauvinist. He's perfectly capable of hunting for himself as a bachelor but once he starts shacking up with the pride he expects the ladies to bring home the bacon.

And once they do the male gets first dibs at the dinner table. When a male gets to the kill everyone moves over until he's had his fill. The male lion seems to have it easy leaving the lionesses to do all the work. And just like lions for the majority of women in 1950 it was a full time job just looking after the man of the house.

Recent surveys have found that 73% of American mothers are now in paid employment and yet they're still doing most of the housework. On average men still only carry out 37% of the domestic duties. But if they need an added incentive it seems that men who make their bed can lay in it too. According to a survey by the lnstitute for Social Research husbands who do more household chores report a much better sex life because their wives are less tired at night. lf that's the case Swedish men should be the most satisfied.

Swedish men do the most housework - with 24 hours each week. American males do about 16 hours while. Japanese men do the least at only 4 hours a week. But the male lion can't get too comfortable. The queens of the jungle keep him around for a reason. His job is to protect the pride from intruders like hyenas and more importantly other male lions. Roaming the fringes of their territory are bachelors that would gladly kill for a chance to lead the pride. They'll attack the resident male and his offspring. This is why the females let the males have such an easy existence.

lf the father of the pride's cubs isn't strong all their babies will die. Rival males are only interested in protecting offspring that they have fathered. lf the bachelors are successful and take over the pride their reward for killing all the cubs is sex. As soon as a lioness stops nursing she quickly comes into heat. And the new males are anxious to get their family started. For both the males and females it's a race against time to get cubs reared before a new male comes in and takes over. lt turns out that this changing of the guard is probably good for lions. lf new males come in and father cubs every few years it broadens the pride's gene pool.

So while the females may appear to be doing all the housework in the relationship lionesses usually live much longer than the warring males. lt's the first sign that
in the battle of the sexes the girls are starting to fight back.

So far we've seen males shelling out for the little woman and dads that do nothing around the house but still to come is a mom that's no angel especially since she's living

The Most Extreme No. 7.

For some couples it seems like all they know how to do is fight. And the animals coming in at number seven in the countdown have taken the battle into the bedroom. The forests of Tasmania are filled with the love songs of the devil. The Tasmanian devil is normally a solitary creature.

And it's no wonder considering its smelly habit of feasting on rotten carcasses. So when a female's preparing to breed she's not looking for Mr Right. These branches will serve as bedding in a burrow that's far from being a love nest.

Things get rough when you have to mate with the devil which is why she's grown a thick
layer of fat around her neck to protect her from the upcoming battle. lt's not long before a bachelor has sniffed her out. But if he wants to mate with her he has to have a show-down with a she-devil.

The Tasmanian devil is number seven in the countdown because their burrow is hell on earth!. Once he's bitten her into submission she succumbs to his advances and they mate. As well as being violent this male is obsessively protective. He's so paranoid that
he blocks the entrance of the den - so she can't leave and no other male can get in.

As soon as he lowers his guard she'll attempt an escape lt's time to show her who's  boss. The male keeps her locked up so tight that she can't even go out and eat
when he's around. The Tasmanian devil likes to keep his woman barefoot pregnant and
in the bedroom. Just like another male chauvinist. One famous battle of the sexes
took place on a tennis court back in 1973.

On one side was the self-described male chauvinist Bobby Riggs. All l know is l want to keep women barefoot pregnant and in the bedroom and the kitchen. He was up against the then women's tennis champion Billie Jean King. The women's movement is really making a better life for more people other than just women.

This isn't just a tennis match-this is a battle of the sexes. The Houston Astrodome was filled with over 30 000 people and another 50 million tuned in at home to see male chauvinism in America being dealt a crushing blow by Billie Jean King's deadly backhand.

And in the Devil's den now it's the female's turn to serve for the match. After three days of violent mating the honeymoon is over. Now it's a fight to get him out of the house - for good. ln this battle of the sexes the female is the winner - leaving the male to roam the forest alone. He succeeded in making her pregnant but she'd rather rear the kids
alone than tolerate him any longer just like the next contender.

No. 6

Charging in to number six in the countdown is the biggest and baddest animal in Africa. There's nothing tougher than a bull elephant. He can be five tons of raging testosterone. But there is one animal that's capable of controlling his every move and that's a female  elephant.

Roaming around in big groups of females and living in a matriarchal society presents a girl with a problem: it's hard to get a date. So when a female elephant goes into heat she advertises. She sends out a deep rumble using low frequency vibrations formed when air is passed through her nasal cavities.

That's why in good conditions bulls more than 10 kilometres away can hear her calling his name. lf she's going to find a suitable mate she wants to choose the biggest and best.
So she's throwing a party and every boy in town is invited. All males will stop to listen to her call but only a few will be in breeding condition.

These males will seek the source of the love song because they're flushed with testosterone and looking for action. Testosterone makes bull elephants even more aggressive and volatile. They have to be tough in order to impress the female because until they've proved
themselves to be worthy she'll give them the run-around.

Human testosterone levels also fluctuate when we meet a mate. lt's as if nature wants to eliminate some of the differences between men and women so that they can concentrate on
replicating the species. When a woman falls in love her testosterone levels increase.
But when a man falls in love his testosterone levels fall making him act more feminine.

lt might pay to remember this the next time you're on a date. But increased testosterone levels are vital for love-struck male elephants. lt's the boost they need to fight for the right to mate. The elephant is number six in the countdown because while the bulls are big and aggressive it's the ladies that are calling all the shots.

The female elephant encourages the males to fight until only one is left standing. That way the female finds the strongest elephant in the district and therefore the best father for her children. For the bull elephant testosterone was the fuel that powered him through one of
the biggest struggles of his life. But other males fight their battles on a daily basis ln the jungles of American cities millions of people answer the call not to mate but to work.

And from out of the chaos comes road rage. The American Automobile Association
reports that 96% of violent road rage incidents involve men. And yet contrary to popular opinion testosterone may not be at fault. Recent research suggests that the orbital region of the brain that controls aggression is bigger in women than it is in men. Both sexes have about the same ability to produce emotions like anger but the structure of a woman's brain means she's better equipped to keep the aggression in check.

The female elephant also controls aggression I but of potential mates. By manipulating males into a head on collision she's made sure that she found the best genes for her baby.
ln the battle of the sexes between elephants it pays to have both brains and brawn.
So far in the countdown the males have been fighters not lovers. But as the tables start to turn we'll discover that nice guys won't always finish last. And we'll meet a bossy queen whose throne is in the toilet. That's next on The Most Extreme.

The Most Extreme No. 5.

Things are starting to change in our countdown of the Battle of the Sexes. Because in  baboon troops good girls don't always go for the bad boys. And in baboon society I there are plenty of mean males to choose from. No baboons are safe from a big male behaving badly. Not even females. Once it was thought that this kind of aggression helped a male establish dominance. But recently scientists have discovered that some males have been using more subtle tactics to win the heart of a female.

The baboon is number five in the countdown because this sensitive new-age guy doesn't
beat his chest I be baby sits! Handling a baby with care shows he can be a good father and
it gives the mother a much needed break. Babysitting may be boring - but not if it gets him the kind of attention he's looking for. A male with a baby is a real ladies' man. And while grooming her may not make her more beautiful it does make him more attractive to her!.

This is something she'll never forget because it's a case of you scratch my back and l'll scratch yours. When she goes into heat she may ignore the troop's loud bullies and quietly slip away with the kind and caring male. That's why some of these googly eyed males are learning that being nice is just as effective as battling. But there are other ways of
attracting the opposite sex. lf you don't want women to battle you just working up a sweat may be the best way to make them relax.

That's because all humans secrete pheromones as part of their natural body odour.
These chemicals send subtle messages that affect our behaviour ln one experiment
researchers took extracts from men's armpit sweat and wiped them onto women's upper lips. After six hours the women reported feeling happier and less tense. So guys if you want the ladies to relax around youI just leave the deodorant at home! But some baboons just can't relax.

When a male throws a tantrum and the girls feel pushed around they know where to go - straight into the arms of their sweet and sympathetic boyfriend. Being big and belligerent
takes its toll. Overly-aggressive baboons die younger and succumb to disease quicker
than the gentler males which could mean that bossy baboons are on the way out. But not even the nastiest baboon can dominate like the terrible queen that's up next in the countdown.

King Cobra

Deep within the jungles of southern India, there lives a legendary king respected and feared by all. He is swift and strong and deadly. He is the largest venomous snake in the world. But until now his life has been a mystery. This is the story of a monarch and his remarkable travels through a fragile kingdom. It is early on a cool morning when the king of snakes embarks on a journey. His is an ancient forest alive with creatures great and small. Like the king cobra himself many hover precariously close to extinction. But on this morning the jungle pulses with the sounds of insects and birds.

A great Indian hornbill delicately feeds his family hidden in their nest below. Through this jungle book world the king roams great distances. Though his movements are quiet those around always take notice for crossing the king cobra's path could cost them their lives. Despite the uproar his presence causes his world is mostly silent. He only hears the deepest of rumblings He has picked up the heavy footfalls of a nearby elephant. Even the mighty pachyderm steers clear of this serpent, for just one bite may bring death. But the king would strike such a beast only in self-defense, for he feeds solely on snakes. Still, the langurs are cautious.

Today, the king is not interested even in snakes. He is searching for something else, something very important. His eyesight is better than most serpents' but he sees without color and only registers objects when they move. He smells the air with his tongue. So acute is this sense, he can use it to find water. And that's exactly what he's looking for. Today, water is critical for the king is about to shed his skin. He needs extra fluid to help separate his old coat from his new. It is an uncomfortable time for the king cobra, a new skin is developing beneath his outer scales. He must find a place to hide until it is time to shed. The king is unaccustomed to his fragile condition. It is an uncertain time.

At last he discovers a burrow. And none of the forest's creatures wants to share quarters with the king. For the next ten days, he will stay here. Irritable and tense, he's sensitive to any movement nearby. Even the harmless wanderings of a turtle unsettle the king. For his eyes have become cloudy from a secretion which helps separate his skins. Half blind and vulnerable, he is always ready to strike. At last his eyes begin to clear a sign his new skin has finished growing. The king is back but must still shed his old scales. His spent skin is tight and itchy. As he scrapes and rubs to relieve the discomfort, his outer scales begin to peel. It is a remarkable transformation even his fangs, teeth, and the tips of his tongue will be replaced again and again during the course of his life.

When the skin over his eyes lifts away he is given new windows through which to view his world. At 12 feet long and still growing, the snake must endure shedding four or five times a year.

His discarded skin makes a perfect meal for the smaller creatures of his realm. In this kingdom, nothing is wasted. After ten days without eating, the king is hungry. A tree offers a good vantage point for spotting prey. For his size, the king cobra is an agile climber. Now he waits and watches. A movement in the tree reveals another hungry creature... a young hornbill. Its father has spotted something. The king cobra watches the hunt unfold A vine snake ribbons across a nearby branch. Much smaller than the cobra, this nimble hunter is no match for the hornbill. The little snake looks as fierce as he can. But it is only a brave display.

His venom is mild. The young hornbill gets the prize. And the king will wait for bigger meals. Below on the forest floor a rat snake is on the hunt. It is one of India's largest non-venomous snakes. Quick and voracious, it will take any small mammal. From his perch the king spots the movement below. It is just what he's been waiting for.Silently, the king cobra joins in the hunt. The rat snake follows a scent. Its sensitive tongue has led it to prey. The king cobra is on their trail. As the rat snake prepares to attack, the king closes in.

In a flash, the rat escapes. And now, the hunter becomes the hunted Against the hooded death, even a seven-foot snake hasn't a chance. The rat snake puffs up its throat and lowers its tongue in threat, but it is a futile gesture. One strike delivers venom and a crushing grip. The rat snake returns the attack but it's already doomed. Within minutes the giant cobra's venom takes effect, paralyzing the prey. The heart stops pumping, the lungs stop breathing, and the victim suffocates. The king cobra can easily devour this large snake. His backward-facing teeth help guide the victim down his throat. Digestion has already begun, for the king's venom helps dissolve the rat snake from the inside out.

Still, the king cobra will linger over this meal. And for the days it takes to absorb his prey, he'll have no need to hunt. But yet the king is restless. It is now the dry season the time to find a mate. A new, intoxicating scent fills the air. Some of the rain forest's trees have dropped their leaves and begun to fruit. It is a joyous season for langurs. Across the forest the jackfruits are ripening. Their sweet, pungent odor beckons. It's an irresistible lure to creatures both small and great. To reach the succulent flesh within the 20-pound fruit, the prickly skin must first be peeled. It's a messy job for even the most adept of elephants. She leaves a veritable banquet in her wake. This is a season when king cobras roam widely through the forest. But today the king's subjects are distracted by the fruit. They take only passing notice of his presence. The king still seeks a mate. And it's in this fruiting season that he's most likely to find one. But it's not a female he encounters.

It's a rival... a formidable male. A potent threat, he must be driven away. Each is capable of killing the other with a single bite. A strange duel begins an encounter rarely witnessed and never before filmed. Rather than a fight to the death, the battle has evolved into a ritualized dance. To win, one snake must force the other's head to the ground. At last, there is a victor. It's the intruder. The king has been dethroned. Driven from his domain, he must seek another. But the rain forests of southern India are a finite land. As people press in, less and less remains for the king cobra. Our king has no choice but to leave the jungle. This cultivated land is not as rich as the king cobra's old domain, but still, he makes himself at home here. Yet he must be evicted if work is to resume at the plantation. And even the king is no match for humans who are determined and armed. Fortunately for the king, a special sort of hunter has been called in.
